Gila was born May 10, 1932 in Howard, Alabama during the Great Depression. Howard was a mining camp town. She had fond memories of playing in the coal piles before moving to Fayette, Alabama in 1939. World War II brought about many changes as her sister Avanelle, moved back home with her daughter Judy. Her brother’s wife Aileen also moved in, while their husbands went off to war. This time in her life created a lifelong bond with her family and Alabama.

In 1956, Gila married Kenneth McAnally, and shortly there after, moved to Texas. Her mother was against the marriage, since she knew her child would be moving a world away at that time. But her mom followed a few years later to help with the children while Gila worked.
